Flower Care

Last updated: April 6, 2026

A few simple habits make the difference between flowers that fade in two days and flowers that last through the week. Here is what we recommend to get the most out of every arrangement from Fiore Designs, Los Angeles.

Water

Fresh water is the single most important thing for your flowers. Fill your vase two-thirds full with room-temperature filtered or distilled water. Tap water often contains chlorine and minerals that shorten flower life. Change the water every two days. Bacteria builds up quickly and is the number one reason flowers wilt early.

Trimming

When your flowers arrive, trim each stem at a 45-degree angle, about 2cm from the bottom. This opens up the surface area for water absorption. Use sharp scissors or pruning shears. Dull cuts crush the stem and block water intake. Re-trim every time you change the water.

Remove Submerged Leaves

Pull off any leaves that sit below the waterline. Submerged leaves break down quickly and create bacteria that cloud the water and shorten the life of the arrangement. Keeping the water clean is the easiest way to add days to your flowers.

Remove Wilting Blooms

As individual flowers naturally age, remove them from the arrangement. Wilting blooms release ethylene gas, which speeds up aging in the flowers around them. Pulling them out keeps the rest of the bouquet looking fresh longer.

Clean Your Vase

Bacteria builds up on the inside of your vase between arrangements. Before placing new flowers, wash the vase with hot soapy water or run it through the dishwasher. A clean vase gives your next arrangement the best start.

Hydrangeas, Orchids, and Other Water-Absorbing Varieties

Some flowers absorb water through their petals, not just their stems. Hydrangeas, phalaenopsis orchids, and dancing lady orchids all benefit from a cold water soak every couple of days. Submerge the blooms briefly in cold tap water to refresh them.

Keep Away from Heat

Place your flowers in a cool, well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and kitchen appliances. Heat causes flowers to open faster and wilt sooner. A cooler room extends the life of the arrangement noticeably.

Avoid Drafts

While ventilation is good, strong drafts from open windows, fans, or air conditioning vents pull moisture from petals and speed up dehydration. Find a spot with gentle airflow, not direct wind.

Flower Care for Events and Weddings

If you are receiving flowers for a wedding or event, the same care basics apply. Keep arrangements in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, and make sure vases stay full. For event installations and centerpieces, our team handles setup, hydration, and cleanup so the flowers look their best from start to finish.
